W.J. Deutsch Invests in Children, Community and Country
|
|
White Plains, NY -- 25 April 2008 – W.J. Deutsch & Sons, Ltd, the fifth largest wine import company in the United States, has invested in the future of their children, their environment and their country over the last two months.
Yesterday, for “Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day”, the company hosted 23 of its employees’ children in group activities focused on the “Making Choices for a Better World” theme, including education on recycling and other eco-friendly ways to protect the environment. These activities immediately followed the company’s celebration of Earth Day in which they announced that the company was “going green” through a series of proactive initiatives including a recycling program.
William Deutsch, Founder and Chairman of the 27 year old company, commented that, “Family is our most important core value. We are a family owned and operated company, working with family owned distributors and wine producers from around the world. We look at our employees as an extension of our own family, and strongly believe in investing in their future. Today however, we cannot afford to be insular, and need to expand the concept of family even further and meet our responsibility to make the world around us a better place for our children to inherit.
To commemorate “Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day” the children planted a tree at the corporate headquarters of W.J. Deutsch, and learned that their one tree would provide enough oxygen for 4 adults, provide $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycle $37,500 worth of water, and control $31,250 worth of soil erosion. Their newly learned planting skills will come in handy, as all Deutsch employees were given a tree seedling to take home and plant with their children.
What the children did not find at W.J. Deutsch were Styrofoam or plastic cups to drink from, as these have been permanently replaced on Earth Day with personalised mugs. Other eco-friendly measures have been taken throughout the company headquarters such as fluorescent lighting and recycling bins being installed throughout the offices, while all employees, distributors and suppliers have been requested to cut down on the use of paper, using electronic versions where possible.
“We realize that we are just scratching the surface of what we can do to become a green company, explains Bill, however we are continually looking into what additional changes can be made in the short and long term. In addition we are working with our wine producers to preserve the environment as well. Kunde Estate and Winery, the leading sustainable winery in California and together we are supporting numerous environmental charities and events such as Heal the Bay in California and Earthfest in Boston.”
Finding new ways to conserve energy and save the environment requires education, and W.J. Deutsch hopes that by assisting in sending their employees children to college, and developing their sense of community and global responsibility prior to attending, they are helping to shape a brighter future. Since the inception of the W.J. Deutsch Scholarship Program in 2006, over $100,000 has been awarded to children who have demonstrated academic excellence. This year alone the company awarded $57,000 in scholarships to the children of W.J. Deutsch employees.
W.J. Deutsch also understands that growing their business and supporting their employees would not be possible if they did not have a healthy democracy with a stable economy in which to work. Consequently the company believes in giving back to those that dedicate themselves to protecting our cherished freedoms and prosperous way of life.
“A team of 130 employees built and decorated 25 children’s bikes during our National Meeting in Arizona, which we gave in person to the children of Arizona families who had at least one parent overseas, or had lost a parent in the line of servicing our country. This experience has proved to be incredibly rewarding, not only for our employees, but for our company as a whole! We are dedicated as a company to investing in the future of our children, community and country.”
